Every product on STRKit is evaluated through a short-term rental lens — not a homeowner lens. The priorities are different. A product that's perfect for your home may be terrible for a rental, and vice versa.
Our approach: We research editorial reviews from trusted publications (Sleep Foundation, Good Housekeeping, Wirecutter, Tom's Guide), cross-reference with real host experiences and guest review patterns, and evaluate every recommendation against STR-specific criteria. We prioritize products that are commercially available, well-supported, and have strong track records in hospitality environments.

Every product is scored across these dimensions. The weight of each criterion varies by category — durability matters more for mattresses than soap dispensers.
Durability
High weightCan this product survive repeated guest use and turnover cycles? We prioritize items built for hospitality-grade wear, not owner-occupied home use. A product that needs replacing every 3 months fails this test.
Cleanability
High weightCan your cleaner reset this between guests in minutes, not hours? Machine-washable, stain-resistant, and bleach-safe products score higher. If it requires special care instructions, it will get ruined.
Guest Delight
High weightDoes this noticeably improve the guest experience? We focus on items guests mention in reviews — sleep quality, coffee, towels, WiFi speed. A product that guests don't notice isn't worth a premium.
Value / ROI
Medium weightDoes the cost justify the impact on your nightly rate and review average? We calculate value as guest-delight-per-dollar, not just sticker price. A $150 pillow that prevents "uncomfortable bed" reviews may be the best investment you make.
Replacement Cycle
Medium weightHow often will you need to replace this? We track expected lifespan in months and factor replacement costs into our total-cost-of-ownership calculations. A cheap item you replace monthly costs more than a premium one you replace yearly.
Setup Friction
Medium weightHow hard is this to install, configure, or deploy across multiple properties? Products that ship ready-to-use or include white-glove setup score higher. Hosts managing remotely need products that work without on-site troubleshooting.
Warranty & Support
Low weightIs the manufacturer accessible when something goes wrong? Extended warranties matter more for high-cost items (mattresses, smart locks). We note warranty terms on every recommendation.
Privacy & Compliance
Conditional weightFor tech products (noise monitors, smart locks, cameras): Does this comply with Airbnb's policies and local regulations? Privacy-first design is a non-negotiable requirement for any monitoring or access hardware.
What we don't do.

We don't rely on a single source. Our recommendations are cross-referenced across multiple editorial reviews, host communities, and manufacturer data.
We don't recommend products we wouldn't use ourselves. If something makes the list, it's there because the evidence supports it.
